Job Summary:
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Weather & Catastrophe Analyst to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a strong academic background in meteorology, geography, earth/environmental science, or a related field, coupled with solid technical skills. Some GIS experience is strongly preferred, along with the ability to interpret weather data to support the insurance industry.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Analyze and interpret weather, climate, and catastrophe data to support industry-wide initiatives.
- Assist in developing reports, maps, and visualizations related to weather events, natural disasters, and their impact on the insurance industry.
- Work with GIS software to perform spatial analysis of weather and catastrophe data.
- Collaborate with team members to assess catastrophe risk and assist in the development of industry guidelines and best practices.
- Conduct research on historical weather events and model future risks related to natural disasters.
- Assist in data management, cleaning, and integration of datasets from various sources.
Qualifications/Requirements
Education and/or Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in meteorology, geography, earth/environmental science, or a related field.
- Minimum 2 years of professional experience, preferably in a role involving data analysis, weather forecasting, environmental research, or catastrophe modeling.
Preferred Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for spatial analysis and mapping.
- Experience working with weather data, catastrophe models, or environmental datasets.
- Strong technical skills in data analysis and automation (e.g., Excel, Google Sheets, Python, JavaScript) and document collaboration (e.g., Google Docs)
- Proficiency in creating clear, visual presentations of complex data.
- Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Job Demands
The job requires long hours in front of a computer screen and long hours at a desk or desk alternative, use of a keyboard and mouse, and use of a telephone.
The job requires concentration, reading, writing, analyzing, organizing, interpreting, communicating, decision-making, and maintaining confidentiality.
Work Locations
Remote/ Hybrid remote and in-office as agreed to with supervisor.
PLRB Headquarters, 3025 Highland Parkway, Suite 800, Downers Grove, Illinois, or at remote locations as required for duties.
Some domestic travel to various conferences and meetings.
