POSITION SUMMARY

The Global Position System (GPS) / Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Intern assists with the maintenance, enhancement, and support of the City’s enterprise GIS, with a primary focus on field work-related GIS tasks. This position works primarily outside environment performing GIS data editing, data integration, mapping, and related technical assignments, with some office work conducted as needed for processing and verification.

The GPS/GIS Intern will receive hands-on technical training in existing GIS workflows, software applications, municipal utility datasets as well as various GPS hardware deployments. This position provides practical experience supporting City departments including Public Works, , Community & Economic Development, Police, Fire and other departments.

Work is performed under the direct supervision of the GIS Coordinator and is reviewed for accuracy, completeness, and adherence to established GIS standards and procedures.

This internship is an on-site position based at Batavia's City Hall location, with a flexible schedule between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The hourly rate for this position is $20 per hour.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist with utility-related GIS data maintenance, including Electric, Water, Sanitary Sewer and Stormwater systems.

Operate GPS equipment and ESRI field applications to collect and verify infrastructure data.

Update geospatial data within the ESRI ArcGIS software suite (utilizing ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, Field Maps).

Read and interpret basic engineering drawings, plats, and record drawings for GIS integration.

Support ongoing GIS projects and improvement initiatives under direction of the GIS Coordinator.

Work both indoors (GIS data editing and analysis) and outdoors (field data collection and verification) as required.

Perform other job-related tasks as assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma or GED required.

Enrollment in or completion of a recognized curriculum at an accredited institution of higher education with a geospatial emphasis.

Familiarity with the ESRI ArcGIS software suite (primarily ArcGIS Pro, Field Maps, ArcGIS Online).

Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Ability to understand and operate GPS equipment to collect spatial data.

Basic understanding of spatial data concepts, coordinate systems, and mapping principles.

Ability to read and interpret basic drawings and maps.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, email, and internet browsers.

Ability to work independently and accomplish assigned tasks with minimal supervision.

Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

Ability to effectively communicate technical information verbally and in writing.

Ability to work in both indoor office environments and outdoor field environments.

Ability to walk for extended periods while carrying equipment weighing 25+ pounds.

Ability to perform work in various weather conditions.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS

Possession of a valid Illinois driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.

Ability to perform fieldwork in varying weather conditions.

Ability to lift and/or carry equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.

Work is performed in primarily field and some office settings. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers, various pieces of office equipment, and additional GIS equipment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk or hear; sit; use hands and fingers to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, bend, and crouch while working in the field using a GPS to take readings of assets. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally may lift and/or move with assistance up to 100 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, the ability to adjust focus, and prolonged visual concentration.

While performing the duties of this job in the field, the employee will work in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts; and is occasionally exposed to wet and slippery surfaces, humid conditions, extreme cold and heat.
